Essential Skincare Tips for Older Adults

Collaborative Post

Although ageing makes you wiser, your skin loses collagen and elastin production, which is essential for supple skin. Your skin may also start losing hydration as it becomes thinner and more brittle. Most older adults tend to focus on their face and neck. However, it’s equally important to nourish and take care of the rest of your body.

For instance, you could get rid of toxic deodorants and start using safe natural deodorant for everyone that won’t harm your skin and will keep you feeling nice and fresh. Nevertheless, you may still want to look young and your best self as you age, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting this. Keep Your Skin Moisturised

Add moisturisers to your morning and night skincare regime to keep your skin well-hydrated and smooth. Please choose the one with a mix of emollients and fatty acids to nourish your skin as it would naturally.

Whenever you wash your face or get out of the shower, you should immediately apply your moisturiser to save the hydration effect. This will also help you in dealing with cracked and itchy skin.

Protect Your Skin from the Harmful UV Rays

Exposure to UV rays can lead to wrinkles, premature ageing, and other skin damage. Therefore you should always end your morning skincare with water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or more, even if you’re indoors or there’s an overcast.

You can also find makeup products such as foundation or moisturisers that contain sunscreen. Finally, whenever you go out, wear a brimmed hat and sunglasses to prevent you from squinting, which can contribute to crow’s feet.

Eat Well

“You are what you eat”. We’ve heard this saying to a point where it starts feeling like a cliché. However, we can’t stress enough how important it is to maintain a nutritious, well-balanced diet to keep your inside healthier, which will reflect on the outside (your skin).

Include green veggies, berries, salmon, walnuts, and avocados in your diet to maintain your skin integrity. In a nutshell, make sure you are incorporating all seven nutrients into your diet. If you want to take supplements like vitamins C, E, and K, you should always first ask your doctor.

Wash Gently

Since mature skin produces little natural oil, it can feel quite dry, and you shouldn’t certainly dry it out more by being rough with it. Make sure you wash your face only once a day with lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water even during showers which can over-dry your skin.

You could invest in light cleansers that contain natural ingredients and get the basic task (cleansing) done. To remove makeup, you can consider buying an oil-based makeup remover.

Reduce Stress

Since stress can harm your skin and provoke itchy rashes, flare-ups, dryness, and dullness, you want to minimise stress as much as possible, especially when you’re an older adult.

Do what makes you happy by discovering a new hobby or indulging in your favourite activities. Meditate, go for a walk, stay away from pessimistic people, and jot down your thoughts daily to help yourself feel better and look better. When you minimise stress, you get a good quantity and quality of sleep, which is important for both physical and mental health.
