Fun Hobbies You Should Try With Your Family

Collaborative Post

Hobbies are something that everyone should have, no matter how old or young you are. There are so many people out there without one though, and it’s such a waste considering they are there to bring joy to your life, the likes of which you may be missing otherwise. If you have found yourself with some free time on your hands regularly, then it’s a good idea to take some time to look into various hobbies that you can do with your family. This way, you are getting to spend quality time with those that you love, while also doing something that you all enjoy. Sounds like a win-win!

In this article, we’re going to be discussing some of the different options that you have got that are suitable for pretty much all ages. If there’s nothing on this list for you, then we suggest you sit down and come up with some of your own! We pretty sure that there’s something out there for everyone, but for now, let’s dive into our list.

Walking

The first thing that we want to look at is walking. Walking is one of those things that people don’t really see as a hobby, but we’re not really sure why. If it’s something that you are doing regularly, and something that you are doing for fun, then there’s no reason why it cannot be classed as such. Walking is a great choice because it combines physical activity that isn’t strenuous, with being outside with nature. Humans thrive being outside, whether they want to admit it or not, the majority of us feel better when we are out in the fresh air.

You can do this every morning if you have time, or every evening if this is more convenient for your family. It doesn’t even have to be at the same time every day, and if you don’t have time all day, that’s fine too. As long as it’s something that you are doing regularly and you’re enjoying your time doing it, that’s what matters.

Reading

Reading is, in our opinion, one of the best hobbies out there. While it might not have any physical benefits, it has a lot of mental ones. Yes, you might have seen accounts on social media and Goodreads where people have said that a book broke their heart or that they screamed violently while reading certain books, but it’s all part of the experience.

One of the best things about reading is that you get to live so many different lives, and see life from so many different perspectives. There are so many stories out there that are based on truth, but there are others that are complete fiction. A lot of the time when you’re reading a book which is which doesn’t really matter. You are transported into that book as if you are living that life, and it’s definitely one of the best things that we have ever experienced.

If you want to share this with your family too, then you can do one of two things. First, you can all gather together and one person can read the book out loud. You can take turns if everyone wants to have a go though, so nobody feels left out. Or, you can all buy a copy of the book, read it, and then discuss what you thought like a book club but only for your family.

Games

If you have decided that games are not for you after you have tried them out, then that’s fine. However, if you have decided that games are not a viable solution because you have seen all the commotion from the media about video games, that’s not okay. There are more games out there than just video games, so even if you want to steer clear of those, other options are available to you.

There are board games, there are brain games, there are puzzles and so much more for you to explore if you would be open to it. For example, have you ever sat down and actually attempted a crossword? You might find that you enjoy it, and that others in your family enjoy it too. The same can be said for board games. You don’t really see families playing board games too much anymore, and it’s super sad because it’s a great way to spend time together. It’s well worth looking into at the very least, and trying it out. The great thing about it is that everyone can play no matter how old you are, nobody gets excluded which is the exact kind of hobby you should be looking for.

Art

Have you always loved drawing and painting? Well now you can do this as a hobby and share it with the family. There are so many places, buildings, and nature that are just waiting to be explored and captured. If you like to paint in the comfort of your own home then you can photograph your subjects and work from that. Art can take you all over the world, so look into where you can go next.

Baking

Cakes, biscuits, and pastries, what is not to love about that? Baking can be a wonderful hobby that you can do with the family. Children love helping out in the kitchen so encourage them to get involved. Don’t worry about making a mess – it is all about teaching new skills and your children or grandchildren focusing on something that isn’t technology. If the children want to make cupcakes then this is a great way to get started. You never know, in years to come they might be a world famous baker and it all started in your kitchen!

If you don’t always want to keep the ingredients you need for baking then you can get the boxed ingredients. These are all ready to go and tend to only need things that you will already have, like oil and eggs for instance.

Gardening

Another great idea for a family hobby is gardening. Mostly, people love being in the great outdoors. It also gives you the chance to spend quality time with your loved ones. The world is your oyster when it comes to sorting your garden and making it look pretty. Make sure you keep the grass short and neat. Alternatively you could install artificial turf for a low maintenance option. The best thing is they do little garden tools so the kids can really get involved with pruning and planting new bulbs.

If you don’t have furniture in your garden then it can be nice to go shopping for some. Then you have somewhere to chill out all together. If you don’t have a garden then you can join allotments instead.

Pottery

Finally, if you are looking for something fun to do with the whole family then why not try pottery? You may have seen scenes in movies that make you want to try it but never got around to it. There are plenty of pottery barns that will have space for everyone so enquire about prices and timings. Children love making things and the adults will enjoy watching their creations come to life.

Be aware, you can and probably will get quite messy while doing pottery making. The clay and water will splash up at you and your hands will also be covered in it. Make sure you don’t wear your best clothes as you may not be able to wash it all out.
