Why it Might be Time to Move Out of London

Collaborative Post

There is no doubt that London is a fantastically vibrant and lively city, but over time this can become more of a con instead of a pro. Be it the cost-of-living crisis or rising rental properties, many Londoners are choosing to say goodbye to the Big Smoke. In fact, over 90,000 London renters left the city in 2022 – the largest number in 10 years.

If you’re unsure about whether leaving the city is the right move for you, we’ve put together some reasons to help you make a decision. Here are some of the benefits of moving out of London.

Housing Opportunities

It’s no secret that property prices are rising exponentially in the city. There are far more affordable housing opportunities available outside London, all with excellent transport links. You’ll find plenty of new build homes within a two-hour drive of London that offer far more space and value for money.

This is ideal as you can commute comfortably if you want to visit the city, or if you want more room for your grandchildren to enjoy when they visit. You’ll also find a larger variety of housing types. Your options are more limited in a densely populated city like London. So, if you’re looking to trade your apartment for a roomy bungalow, you’re better off looking elsewhere.

Cost of Living

The variety of shops, bars and restaurants in London is certainly incredible, but the limitless choice can be overwhelming, not to mention expensive. The cost-of-living crisis has meant that inflation has increased dramatically, and the price paid by London households has increased by 26%.

Moving outside of the big city offers a slower-paced and much simpler lifestyle. This allows you to appreciate the smaller things, rather than prioritising overspending on materialism.

Slower Pace

London is fantastic for career progression and youthful experiences, and the iconic capital ranks well in the country’s top cities for young adults as it offers so much in terms of activities and places to visit.

However, this loud and bustling life isn’t ideal for all ages. It’s certainly a young person’s dream but if you’re looking to retire there may be better options out there. Moving somewhere quieter can result in a much more peaceful and relaxing lifestyle, allowing you to focus on your hobbies or lead a more active routine.

Better for Families

While crime is a concern wherever you move, moving to outside London is also safer. Finding a safe place to lay roots is a priority when you have grandchildren. You don’t want to be worrying about your little ones playing outside while they are visiting you.

You’ll likely get to enjoy more room and better outdoor space, which means you will have more opportunities to enjoy fun activities and make memories with your loved ones.
