6 Best SMSF Accountants on the Central Coast: Who Sets Up Your Retirement Pension

Collaborative Post

A self-managed super fund (SMSF) is a retirement fund that its members run themselves, instead of leaving their savings with an industry or retail fund. For readers outside Australia, “pension phase” means the fund has started to pay a member a regular income from their super. It is not the government Age Pension.

Moving a fund into pension phase brings new paperwork. The trustees record the start of the pension, the fund must pay at least a minimum amount each year, and the annual accounts, audit and tax return still have to be done. For many retirees, the question is which accountant will look after that work.

This article looks at six accountants that serve the NSW Central Coast. Each one says on its own website that it handles SMSF pensions. The list is in no particular order.

A Newcastle option that works over Zoom

Some Central Coast trustees also look a little further north. SMSF Australia is an independently owned firm of SMSF accountants and lawyers that works only with self-managed super funds. It has a Newcastle address and works with trustees across the country, saying that “no matter where you are in Australia, our technical directors are only one Zoom meeting away”. Its accounting services page lists “maintaining your pension accounts”, and its annual fee covers the accounting, an independent audit and software. Details are on its Newcastle SMSF accountants page.

Six Central Coast SMSF accountants that describe pension support

Fusion Partners Central Coast

Fusion Partners Central Coast (FPCC) is based in Erina. Its SMSF services cover the establishment of a fund and the preparation of annual accounts and tax returns.

For retirees, the firm lists “Pension Strategy advice, to achieve a 0% tax rate within your fund”. It also helps funds that borrow to buy property or shares.

FPCC describes its work as running “from establishment to wind up”, and says it has been “servicing clients Australia wide since 2006”.

Bottrell Accountants

Bottrell Accountants has an SMSF page for Gosford and works with both new and existing funds. Its services include annual financial statements, lodging the SMSF tax return and “coordination with independent auditors”.

On pensions, its Gosford page has a “Pension Phase Accounting” section and lists “pension and contribution tracking”, along with “contribution strategies and limits”. It also prepares trust deeds and other fund documents.

For funds that hold property, Bottrell covers property investments and helps trustees keep the fund’s investment strategy in line with their long-term goals.

Rogers Lean & Co

Rogers Lean & Co sets up SMSFs, prepares financial statements and lodges annual tax returns. It also handles PAYG instalments and GST registration for funds that need them.

Its pension wording is among the most detailed in this list. The firm says it is “monitoring pension drawdowns, ensuring compliance with minimum payment requirements”. It also lists “coordinating audit, actuarial, and TBAR requirements”. TBAR is the transfer balance account report. Since 1 July 2023, an SMSF lodges it with the Australian Taxation Office within 28 days after the end of the quarter in which a pension starts.

The firm also monitors contributions against the thresholds and sets up structures for funds that want to buy property.

Coleman Financial Group

Coleman Financial Group describes a full service: “From initial setup and bookkeeping to annual financial statements, tax returns, and independent audit coordination”.

For pension phase, the firm records “member contributions, rollovers, pension payments and asset values”. It also helps with record-keeping for limited recourse borrowing arrangements (LRBAs), which some funds use to buy property. An LRBA entered into on or after 10 August 2026 to buy real property can only be used for business real property, but LRBAs entered into before that date can be kept or refinanced.

Coleman publishes its fees: $1,650 to set up a fund and ongoing administration from $1,980 per year. It says that “Central Coast clients can meet with our team locally, while trustees elsewhere in Australia can work with us remotely”.

Tax Stuff

Tax Stuff describes its accountants as “experts in setting up SMSFs”, and says it coordinates “the independent audit process”. It prepares financial statements and tax returns and assists with withdrawals from the fund.

Asked “Do you support pension setup or retirement transitions?”, the firm answers: “We assist with the accounting and compliance aspects related to pension phase transitions”. This suits trustees who are about to move their fund from accumulation into pension phase.

Tax Stuff can also take over the accounting for an existing fund, and it offers “SMSF services Australia-wide”.

Lights On Accountancy

Lights On Accountancy supports trustees “from setup to ongoing administration, with clear advice and fixed pricing”. Its published fees are “SMSF Establishment – $1,650” and “ongoing administration from just $935 per annum”.

The firm prepares annual financial statements, lodges the SMSF tax return and lists “coordination of independent audit”. It also helps trustees with decisions on contributions, pensions and investments.

Lights On serves the Central Coast and Sydney, and works with trustees across Australia through virtual appointments.

Questions to ask about pension paperwork

Before choosing an accountant, it helps to ask a few plain questions. Who prepares the documents when a pension starts? Who checks each year that the minimum pension payment has been made? Who lodges the transfer balance account report? Is the independent audit included in the annual fee, or charged separately? What happens to the fee if the fund holds property or has a loan? And would you prefer to meet in an office, or are video meetings fine?

Conclusion

All six firms say on their own websites that they handle SMSF pensions, but they describe the work in different ways. Some focus on pension strategy, some on tracking payments and reports, and some publish fixed fees. Comparing their own descriptions can help you find an accountant that suits your fund and helps keep your retirement income stream on track.
