Easing the Stress of Buying or Selling a Home as an Older Person

Collaborative Post

Buying a home is well-known for being stressful, but as you get older, this can be even more true. If you’re buying or selling a home, it’s likely been a while since you went through this process, meaning a lot of things may have changed.

But just because something is stressful doesn’t mean that it’s not worth doing. There are ways you can ease the buying process as an older person, helping you buy or sell your property confidently, and ensuring you get what you want. Take a look at the following advice for navigating the house-buying process as you get older.

Research the market

As already mentioned, the housing market has changed considerably over the years. The internet has ensured it’s easier than ever to find a property or list one for sale, so things can move very quickly once they get going. It’s important to understand what’s changed in terms of house prices, mortgage rates and stamp duty (and its variants in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) so that you have a more realistic idea of what you’ll be paying or what you stand to make from selling your property. Property Week and the financial pages of popular news sites are some good places to start.

Get your home in order

It is much easier to sell your home and move once everything is in order. You may have accumulated a lot of things over the years, so a declutter can be useful to make things more manageable. It’s important to be ruthless; that drawer of things you’ve kept ‘just in case’ will seem far less important now that you’re in retirement than 30 years ago. If you struggle to be objective, bring in a friend or family member who can help you make some tough decisions about what to buy and what to keep.

Enlist someone to help you

The house-buying process can be a challenge at any time, but if you haven’t been through it for several years, it’s worth getting a little extra help. A relative or friend can help you work through everything you need to consider before you buy or sell, explain unfamiliar terms and advocate for you as needed. As you get older, things can feel more confusing, so having someone by your side throughout the process can give you confidence.

Work with a recommended conveyancer

The right conveyancer can make a big difference to the overall buying process. Having a conveyancing solicitor you can trust means you will feel comfortable asking questions, and help ensure your sale or purchase moves forward as you’d expect. Ask friends or relatives for advice on conveyancers they’ve used recently, or conduct some searches online to help you find one that’s reputable and well reviewed.

Buying or selling a home can be complex at any age, but it can feel even more overwhelming as an older person. Do what you can to research the process and feel more confident, and enlist someone you can trust to help you through it. Just because something is tough doesn’t mean it isn’t worth doing, so don’t let the stress or uncertainty stop you from making a decision that could bring you a lot of benefits in the future.
