Bible Studies for Children: How to Create a Lesson Plan

Collaborative Post

Do you remember your childhood Bible study or Sunday school? I sure do! I remember being captivated by stories like Joseph and the coat of many colors, David and Goliath, and of course, Jesus walking on water. Like all Christian parents, we want our children to have the opportunity to experience that same wonder and fascination with biblical stories. With a lot of learning taking place at home now, sometimes us parents need to jump and create an engaging lesson for our kids. So today, I’m going to share with you some tried and true Bible study tips for sharing these wonderful stories with your children or grandchildren!

  • Start with Prayer Before jumping into any lesson, take a moment to pause and ask God for guidance. Pray for wisdom, clarity, and understanding as you plan your study. This sets the tone for everything and opens the door for the Holy Spirit to lead you as you teach. Prayer helps create an inviting and peaceful atmosphere, making it easier for your kids to absorb what you’re sharing.
  • Trust in God’s Timing Every child’s spiritual journey is unique, and they’re all developing their personal connection with God. Keep in mind that you’re just a vessel in this beautiful process—God is the one transforming their hearts. When you focus too much on “getting it perfect” or worrying about how things will go, it can create unnecessary stress. Instead, make it a priority to connect with the kids and see them through God’s loving eyes. That’s how you’ll be able to teach His Word in a way that’s meaningful, joyful, and natural.
  • Create a Home-Church Experience Home church can be such a special time for the whole family! Why not turn Sundays into a memorable event? Get the whole family involved in a fun Bible story project – maybe everyone could draw their favorite story or sing along to a fun worship song. It doesn’t have to be complicated. You can enjoy a snack or tea break while reading Scripture together, work on a collaborative art project, or even do a little dance party to some kids’ worship music. The best part? It’s all about building those meaningful connections while keeping things lighthearted.
  • Focus on Gradual Learning Don’t feel like you need to cram everything into one session. It’s easy to get excited and want to share everything, but remember: less is more! If you overload them with too much information, it can feel overwhelming. Instead, choose one key lesson or value to focus on. What do you want them to remember? Tailor your lesson to achieve that goal. Think of it like guiding them on a journey – step by step, so they’re learning at their own pace.
  • Look Ahead to Growth Every Bible study session is a chance for both you and your kids to grow. Sometimes, things won’t go as planned, and that’s okay! Kids are incredibly forgiving, especially when they see you genuinely care about their learning. It’s all part of the process, so don’t worry if you don’t have it all figured out – God will guide you.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, your time with your kids is precious. So when you’re teaching Bible stories, keep your focus on delivering God’s love and message in a way that’s fun, engaging, and full of heart. Trust God with the challenges that may come your way, and give your full attention to the kids during study time. They thrive when they feel safe, valued, and accepted. Just like Jesus, let’s warmly welcome them into His presence. If you show up on time, prepared, and ready to embrace each child with sincerity, your Bible study time will be filled with joy and growth.
